We are in a healthcare crisis in Canada. Our costs continue to rise and our outcomes are dropping with respect to other jurisdictions around the world. Interestingly we have a strong culture of developing innovative solutions and technologies being built in Alberta yet they are rarely adopted by the health system. We have an opportunity to transform our health system and drive economic development in region. Reg Joseph is well regarded in the local health innovation community and brings a broad perspective of experience to the role. In his prior experience he served as an equities analyst for a Boston-based healthcare investment bank, an executive in residence at TEC Edmonton (a local incubator), a CEO for a local technology company Metabolomic Technologies Inc. and most recently as the VP of Health at Alberta Innovates. This broad perspective on many critical dimensions of our local eco-system is a critical asset in the foundational work that he will undertake for Health City. Health Cities aims to improve the health of Canadians by delivering innovative healthcare solutions that can be scaled to grow the health sector nationally. It engages with clinicians, innovators, philanthropic organizations, industry and academia to address key health challenges We are a not-for-profit organization that helps de-risk the environment and accelerate our innovators’ solutions. We are a trusted third party in verifying what innovators can bring to the table, including relationships, expertise, global reach, investment, innovation or policy influence. |

2024-02-26 12:00:00Z | Feb. 26, 2024 | David Makowsky, Dir, Ukrainian Cultural Village | Connections Past and Present: Alberta and Ukraine | Feb. 26, 2024 12:00 p.m. |
This presentation will explore the strong relationship that exists between Albertans and Ukrainians today. It will explore early Ukrainian settlement in Alberta, the role of the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village to preserve this story, and how Alberta’s Ukrainian community has grown and become enriched over successive waves of Ukrainian immigration to Canada. David Makowsky is the Director of the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, an open-air museum that provides an interactive exploration of early Alberta settlement history by delivering true-to-life experiences and educational programs based on the Ukrainian experience. As part of his role, David is also administratively responsible for nine provincial historic sites owned and operated by Alberta Arts, Culture and Status of Women. The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village Society was founded in 1971 to develop a heritage village commemorating the settlement of east central Alberta by Ukrainians. Soon after, the Society bought the present site and began relocating buildings there from farms and towns of east central Alberta. The Province of Alberta acquired the site in 1975, and continues to interpret the major theme of “Early Ukrainian Settlement in East Central Alberta to 1930.” Since that time, more than 40 buildings have been moved to the UCHV where they have been researched, restored, and furnished to their early 20th century appearance. The museum also has a multi-purpose visitor centre with exhibit gallery spaces to provide a closer understanding of early Ukrainian settlement in east central Alberta. Neil Gower loves the North, the area around Great Slave Lake, and old tugboats. He holds a B.A. in history and an LL.B. from the UofA. Gower has worked extensively in the North, beginning with four summers working for Northern Transportation Co. Ltd, and then practising law (primarily as a legal aid defense lawyer) in Hay River 1975 to 1977 and for business clients throughout the NWT thereafter. A strong supporter of northern business and Indigenous learning, Gower is a fifth generation western Canadian. Gower's family has been involved in and focused on the history of the great northwest ever since. Gower's love of northern history and admiration of Gordon Gill's initiative and dedication fueled his desire to tell a unique story of "A Metis Man's Dream..." Gill's life of struggle and success, opportunities seized and lost, and continuous adaptation mirror the tremendous changes in Canada's North over the last half Twentieth Century. Gower reveals the remarkable "life and times" of a pioneering metis entrepreneur against a backdrop of significant historical transitiions in Northern development, lifestyles, marine transportation, mining, and petroleum exploration. Now retired Gower is a writer living in Edmonton. He was a lawyer and long time friend of Gordon Gill, metis shipbuilder. |
