Brain Changes in Addiction: A Dangerous Journey

Apr. 15, 2024 12:00 p.m.
SUMMARY:  Dr. Parker will answer some key questions about addiction, such as how addiction changes the brain, and most importantly, why addiction changes the brain so that often recovering users show cognitive impairments.

Tim retired from 37 years of teaching at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta.    As noted in his blog:

The first goal is to introduce you to my book on what addiction is and how it changes the brain.....

The second goal is to provide articles on the many interesting discoveries in psychology that I have learned about, and taught about in my years of teaching. My area is biological psychology, more commonly known as brain and behaviour. I will be drawing on the many psychology courses that I have taught.

Rotarian Myrna Findt

Diversity Equity and Inclusion in Rotary, District 5370 and our Clubs

May 13, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Myrna Findt is the chair of the District 5370 DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) committee which was formed in the fall of 2023.

Through the committee's work, Rotary Clubs shall have the skills, abilities, education, resources, and culture to strengthen Rotary Clubs’ core values. Communities are empowered in District 5370 through the betterment of our Rotary Clubs.

The presentation will be a mixture of the following:

-DEI in the District at the moment and hopefully in the future
-vision of DEI in the District and in each Club
-DEI and benefits for the Clubs
-DEI in your Club: where and how to start

Myrna was born and raised in Germany and moved to Canada in 2011 together with her husband Chris and as well as the rest of the family - 2 horses and 4 cats at that time.

In the German education system, she studied law and is a certified knowledge management system developer. Working in IT, she has managed projects on all levels and all types of business environments and was responsible for the business relationship between the largest energy provider in Europe with Microsoft, and SAP before moving to Canada.

Living in Canada, professionally she started as a Licenced Immigration Consultant and is now working with her husband Chris in their own IT and Security company.

Being involved in all kinds of things her whole life, Myrna received an award for outstanding involvement in extracurricular activities from her high school, was the first female chair of the law student council of the University of Wuerzburg and was a member of the cross-faculty student council.

Right now, residing on an acreage in Parkland County, she is on the board of a horse rescue and the family consists of 3 dogs, 4 cats, 4 horses and 3 foster horses – but that’s a very fluent condition.  Her husband Chris was a Rotarian in Germany – in a Club that allowed women to become members in 2011. Learning and experiencing the differences in the world of Rotary, she joined the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove in Nov 2015, hosted Youth Exchange Students, and joined the District Youth Exchange Team in 2018. She was president of the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove in 2022-2023, is currently Assistant Governor for District 5370 for Area 5 and is visiting today in her role as chair of District 5370's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee.

Fringing is for Everyone

Jun. 03, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Presenters:

  • Megan Dart, Executive Director, Fringe Theatre
  • Murray Utas, Artist Director, Fringe Theatre

Fringing is for Everyone

The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is the largest, longest-running Fringe Theatre Festival in North America and one of the top five worldwide. Each year, we welcome more than 500,000 site visits and ignite more than $16 Million in local economic impact over the 11 days of our Festival. We welcome artists from across the street and around the globe to share their stories with engaged Edmonton audiences. 100% of ticket sales from the Festival go back to Artists. In 2023, we returned $1.2 million in ticket sales to Artists. The Festival is made possible thanks to the dedication and skill of 1,000+ Volunteers; 1,600+ local, national, and international Artists; and 200+ skilled arts workers. We drive the arts ecology here at home, across Canada, and around the world.

But more than that, Fringe Theatre is a safer space for brave ideas and big artistic risk. At Fringe Theatre, everyone is radically welcome. Our currency is kindness. We champion the dream of making it: making art, making community, making change, making memories.

From our free KidsFringe programming, to our Indigenous led pêhonân Series; from our harm-reduction informed approach to community empowerment through our Community Care program, to our ASL for Theatre workshops; from our Co-Fringer engaged Volunteer program to our art-based training platform that celebrates inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessible: Fringing is for everyone and everyone is fringing.

Learn how Fringe helps make Edmonton a vibrant, healthy, creative place to live, work, and play all year long.

Junior Achievement 60 Years of Creating Entrepreneurs

Jul. 22, 2024 12:00 p.m.

JA (Junior Achievement) is the world’s largest NGO dedicated to educating young people about business. We strive to inspire and prepare youth to succeed in a global economy. With over 120 member organizations worldwide, JA brings a global view of business to local communities.  From Junior Achievement website:   https://janorthalberta.org/

Cheryll Watson is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs.  She’s a born and raised Edmontonian whose early career with Intuit, a global leader in financial software, gave her an immersive understanding of the importance of small businesses. Making the deliberate choice to give back to her city, in 2015, Cheryll left Intuit and applied her skills and experience to leading growth in the entrepreneur and innovation ecosystems of Edmonton and Alberta. At Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, she founded Innovate Edmonton (now Edmonton Unlimited) focused on creating the best possible environment for locally grown tech enabled startup companies.

Cheryll’s past experience working in some of the world’s most prosperous global cities inspired her to run for Mayor in the 2021 election.  Following that she played a lead role in opening the doors of STEM Collegiate - a new public charter school in Edmonton focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and now serves as the Board Chair.

Cheryll is the President and CEO of Junior Achievement Northern Alberta.  JA inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy by providing financial literacy and entrepreneurship training and a broader view into career opportunities.

The school awarded its first Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree in 1924, and in 2010, it was formally named "The Alberta School of Business." These include expanding master's programs in areas like management analytics and real estate development, establishing The Cities Institute to foster interdisciplinary research, and enhancing accessibility through holistic admissions. Additionally, ASB is building international partnerships, such as launching an MBA program in Singapore and developing new 2+2 programs with institutions in Latin America and Asia, all aimed at ensuring the school remains at the forefront of business education globally.

Susan Ancel, Director, One Water Planning, EPCOR

EPCOR’s One Water Journey of Integrated Resource Planning – A History of Innovation and Resiliency

Sep. 16, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Topic Summary:  EPCOR Water Services has utilized an Integrated Resource Planning approach to manage the Water utility in Edmonton since the early 1990s.  Integrated Resource Planning looks beyond the traditional master planning approaches focused solely on grey infrastructure solutions to opportunities to work with the environment and the community to identify approaches that build overall resiliency in the utility and position the utility as a partner for the changing community growth needs.   Since 2017 with the transfer of the Drainage utility from a City of Edmonton department into EPCOR has been approaching water management from a One Water perspective.   Susan will provide an overview of the successes of this One Water and Integrated Planning approach in Edmonton over the last few years, including our successes in water conservation, stormwater strategies and future direction to the wastewater systems in the community that make us a leader in Canada in management of our water resources.

Susan Ancel is responsible for the development of the strategic plans for the utility across the entire water cycle for EPCOR Water Services. Some of her accomplishments include being recognized for her development of the Integrated Resource Plan for flood mitigation for Edmonton that considered capital and operational risk mitigation planning, as well as the interrelationships between utilities, insurance, disaster response agencies and the public.
