3rd annual Robert Burns luncheon via Zoom and IN Person at noon on Monday, January 24, the 263nd anniversary of the famous Scottish poet’s birth. The in person luncheon will be held at the Chateau Lacombe. Attendees are required to provide QR code for full vaccination status.
The meeting will feature bagpipe music, Burns poems and Scottish humour. The keynote presentation will be given by a member of the Edmonton Burns Club. Scottish Canadians are people of Scottish descent or heritage living in Canada. As the third-largest ethnic group in Canada and amongst the first Europeans to settle in the country, Scottish people have made a large impact on Canadian culture since colonial times. According to the 2016 Census of Canada, the number of Canadians claiming full or partial Scottish descent is 13.93% of the nation's total population. However, some demographers have estimated that the number of Scottish Canadians could be up to 25% of the Canadian population. Mike will provide a brief history on how he went from an audit firm, to the largest privately held spirits company in the world, to a small but mighty brewery in Saskatoon. Saskatchewan. He will provide insight into the Western Canadian beer industry, how Great Western Brewery started and the evolution of both the industry and brewery over the past five years. Competition, changes in the retail environment and the impact of the legalization of cannabis on alcohol sales. Saskatoon-raised Michael Brennan is currently President and CEO of Great Western Brewing Company. Michael started his career in the audit and accounting field working with both Deloitte and Ernst & Young. From this base Michael has continued to build his career in a variety of roles, including as a former senior executive with Bacardi Limited (CEO – Bacardi International Limited and VP Finance, Treasurer and Controller – Bacardi Limited) and as Chief Financial Officer of Vendasta Technologies Inc. in Saskatoon (2014 – 2018). Michael served on the Board of Directors of Great Western Brewing Company for two years prior to taking the helm as President in 2018. Michael is also currently a Board Member of the Saskatchewan Blue Cross. His career path has allowed Michael to gain a solid understanding of many industries, including the investment, insurance and consumer packaged goods sectors. His over twenty years of executive experience in North America and Europe involved leading key transformational business initiatives while delivering consistent growth. Originally from St.Albert, after receiving her Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, she spent several years with The Institute fro Inclusive Security, a US based organization doing work in public policy with several organizations such as NATO and the United Nations.
What is “Women, Peace and Security”? How is it relevant to Canada? How does it relate to our roles in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and beyond? Jacqueline will explain why Canada created the position and how she works to fulfill her mandate.

Developing Relationships and Partnering with Indigenous Peoples

This presentation is the first of the Indigenous Speaker Series for 2022. DR. SHALENE JOBIN is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies, Director of the Indigenous Governance and Partnership program, Co-Founder of the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge, and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Governance at the University of Alberta. Dr. Jobin is the co-creator and founding Academic Director of the Indigenous Partnership Development Program, an executive-level teaching partnership between Executive Education and the Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta. Shalene is Cree from her mother (Wuttunee family) and Métis from her father (Jobin family) and is a member of Red Pheasant Cree First Nation (Treaty Six). Shalene has published in different journals and edited collections, she has a forthcoming book with UBC Press titled, Upholding Indigenous Economic Relationships: nehiyawak Narratives.
Presentation Description: In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the societal and political landscape when developing relationships and partnering with Indigenous peoples. This session introduces the audience to the context they work within when engaging with Indigenous people, communities, businesses and organizations.

Building Bridges - Interfaith Coexistence and Harmony

Len Gierach is a member of the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Interfaith Society and the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove. Guy Blood is the President of the Interfaith Society. Len is a Rotarian from Parkland County. His classification area is marketing and sales and he owns a health and wellness business in partnership with his wife Heather. He has been a keen "interfaith educator activist" for 40+ years, is a lifetime member of the Edmonton Interfaith Centre, currently serves on the World Interfaith Harmony Week 2023 committee and the North American Interfaith Network as a board member.
This presentation includes a screening of a 14 minute video entitled “Building Bridges” that explores the diverse faith groups in Edmonton that work together despite their differences. Len and Guy would then follow up with a short verbal presentation and a Q and A session which they hope will focus on how our members can support the UN initiative with its focus on tolerance and acceptance of others.

Indigenous Tourism

This is the fifth presentation in our Indigenous Speaker Series. Keith Henry, CEO, Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada https://indigenoustourism.ca/ Mr. Keith Henry is a Métis person that was born in Thompson, Manitoba and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Mr. Henry achieved a B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1995. Mr. Henry has become an international Aboriginal cultural tourism leader receiving Aboriginal/Indigenous recognition as the former CEO for Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia (AtBC). In April 2014 the inaugural World Indigenous Tourism Alliance award recognized the work of AtBC and Mr. Henry’s leadership. Mr. Henry has been spearheading the growth of authentic Aboriginal tourism in Canada as he worked to redevelop the national Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada as elected chair when this organization incorporated in April 2015. In October 2015 Mr. Henry took the full time role as the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada’s CEO. |
