Topic: An update on Ukraine including our club's involvement
 

Due to a cancelation of our scheduled speaker, we have had to quickly put together this meeting as a replacement.  Anna Wieczorek to tell us recent news from Warsaw.  Plus Viktor Serbulov, YMCA Ukraine, will give us an update.   Presentation may include others involved in the support of Ukraine.

Indigenous Language Revitalization Program

Pamela McCoy-Jones will speak about the "Supporting Indigenous Language Revitalization" program, a new community-driven project aimed to support revitalization of Indigenous languages for current and coming generations.

McCoy-Jones is an experienced policy advisor with over 15 years of policy and strategic planning experience specializing in Indigenous education in the provincial government. Working knowledge of government policy development processes and strategic planning within relevant legislations and regulations. Proven ability to establish positive working relationships with a broad variety of clients and demonstrated success in managing complex issues within short timelines.

Pamela is an administrator in the office of Provost & Vice-President Academic, Indigenous Programming and Research. University of Alberta

Sleep in Heavenly Peace - Building Beds June 4th

Join us in this Rotary Club activity to build beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace.   No Experience necessary.   Basically after a safety session we build beds outdoors in two different shifts. 

You can volunteer for one or more of the following shifts:

7 to 9 am - Set up materials and work stations

9 to 12:30 pm - Construction of beds

1 to 4:30 pm - Construction of beds

4:30 to 6 pm - Wrap up, storage and clean up 

You need to apply by May 27th.   Shift(s) are confirmed June 1st 2022.

Len Gierach & Guy Blood, Edm Interfaith Society

Building Bridges - Interfaith Coexistence and Harmony

Len Gierach is a member of the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Interfaith Society and the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove.  Guy Blood is the President of the Interfaith Society.

Len is a Rotarian from Parkland County. His classification area is marketing and sales and he owns a health and wellness business in partnership with his wife Heather.

He has been a keen "interfaith educator activist" for 40+ years, is a lifetime member of the Edmonton Interfaith Centre, currently serves on the World Interfaith Harmony Week 2023 committee and the North American Interfaith Network as a board member. 
 
This presentation includes a screening of a 14 minute video entitled “Building Bridges” that explores the diverse faith groups in Edmonton that work together despite their differences.  Len and Guy would then follow up with a short verbal presentation and a Q and A session which they hope will focus on how our members can support the UN initiative with its focus on tolerance and acceptance of others.

Mr. Keith Henry is a Métis person that was born in Thompson, Manitoba and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Mr. Henry achieved a B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1995.

Mr. Henry has become an international Aboriginal cultural tourism leader receiving Aboriginal/Indigenous recognition as the former CEO for Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia (AtBC). In April 2014 the inaugural World Indigenous Tourism Alliance award recognized the work of AtBC and Mr. Henry’s leadership. Mr. Henry has been spearheading the growth of authentic Aboriginal tourism in Canada as he worked to redevelop the national Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada as elected chair when this organization incorporated in April 2015. In October 2015 Mr. Henry took the full time role as the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada’s CEO.

Victor Cui, Pres and CEO Edmonton Elks football

Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Victor Cui is the President and CEO of the Edmonton Elks Football Club – one of the flagship franchises in the Canadian Football League and 14-time Grey Cup champions. Cui was announced as the Club’s president on January 25, 2022 and brings a wealth of global sports experience to the hometown team he grew up cheering for.:

Prior to his homecoming with the Elks, Cui rose to prominence on the global sports scene with mixed martial arts promotion ONE Championship. Cui served in a variety of roles with ONE, beginning as a co-founder and the company’s first CEO in 2010. Cui went on to become ONE’s CEO International and led multiple areas of the company’s global business. He also served as CEO of ONE Elite Agency, managing some of the world’s biggest MMA athletes and celebrities.

Over his decade-plus run with ONE, Cui played a central role in growing the company to become Asia’s largest sports media property, with broadcasts to more than 150 countries. Thanks in part to Cui’s leadership and vision, the company held a total valuation of more than $1 billion (USD) as of January 2022.

Daniel Quon-Watson, Deputy Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs (CIRNA), will talk about "The mandate of his relatively new federal department and the work they are doing as Canada works towards reconciliation with First Nations.”
