![]() Annual Scottish / Robert Burns luncheon
Jan 23, 2023 12:00 PM
All are welcome to join us for this annual celebration for everything Scottish, particularly for the poet Robert Burns, whose life is honored at this time all around the world. Dr. Kenneth Munro, PhD, Professor Emeritus, graduated from the University of Ottawa and moved to Edmonton in 1972 to begin academic research and teaching at the University of Alberta in the Department of History, Classics and Religion. His expertise and research interests have included Canadian and French Canadian history, the Canadian Crown, Canadian politics, as well as Scottish political history. This background led to writing and editing many related books, publications, and articles, including two books on Edmonton and Alberta. Ken was able to experience politics firsthand when in the early 1980’s, he took a three-year leave of absence to become an Executive Assistant and Advisor to one of the ministers in the Pierre Trudeau government in Ottawa. Today, Ken is retired but is still involved in several Edmonton community organizations including the Sir Winston Churchill Society, the Royal Overseas League, and the Monarchist Society of Canada. Of more importance and relevance to our 2023 annual Rotary Club Robert Burns luncheon, he is an avid follower of the history and written works of Robert Burns. Ken is a longstanding member of the Edmonton Burns Club for which he served as President in 1999. Watch for the Scotch basket raffle to fund raise for a local charity supporting the downtown community. This year we are supporting "student lunches" at the Inner City High School. A Scottish Piper will provide music to set the mood. Come join us with for some scrumptious Scottish food which often includes Haggis, Neeps (mashed turnips) and Tatties (mashed potatoes) depending on what the Chateau Lacombe has available. If you can, wear something Scottish as simple as a tartan scarf. Who was Robert Burns? His most famous work is the song Auld Lang Syne. "Rabbie" Burns was born Jan 25 1759 and deceased at 37 years in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland. Other notable works include: "To a Mouse" "A Man's a Man for A' That" "Ae Fond Kiss" "Scots Wha Hae" "Tam O'Shanter" "Halloween" "The Battle of Sherramuir"
