Note this meeting to be located at The Churchill Seniors Residence (Revera)  10015 103 Ave NW, Edmonton

Free Underground Parking accessible from the back alley.  Buzz into reception and they will let you in.   Park and take the elevator to the main floor then press the buzzer on the locked door to gain entrance to the reception area.  After signing in your license plate, proceed to second floor to the Fitness Room where the meeting will be held. Presentation commences at 12 noon.  Lunch served by 12:45 noon.

Best to arrive by 11:45 am!

The business and presentation part of the meeting will take place at the start of the meeting followed by a catered lunch.   Opposite of our regular meetings. Residents are having their lunch at 12 noon and servers are busy with them.

Youth Services Committee, chaired by Edward Mondol, will provide an update on their projects. 

Presentations will run 12 noon to at least 12:45 followed by lunch so best to arrive at 11:45 am. 

YEX - Youth Exchange -    a student from Edmonton is headed for Japan while we are expecting a new student from elsewhere

INTERACT - for students ages 12 to 18 to develop leadership skills and Service Above Self

RYLE - Rotary Youth Leadership Experience - May 4 to 7,  2023 at Camp Nakamun

RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - usually in November each year

RYPEN - Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (Youth Leading Youth) - usually in May each year

Girls CAN 2023 -  Five teams of Girls at Laurier School created a 2 1/2 min video explaining their socially driven community project that they can do in 90-days "with our help".   The top team will join in our meeting online (to be determined).

The mission of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) is to support Canada’s Search and Rescue (SAR) program and to promote SAR awareness.

From the Winspeare website:   A skilled pilot, Bill is an active air crew member and instructor with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association and teaches ground school at the Edmonton Flying Club. He has been known to fly colleagues to remote northern communities as part of the National Arts Centre’s music outreach clinics.

Bill Dimmer arrived in Edmonton in 1971 to join the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra until retiring from
that organization in 2014. Bill served as a teacher, mentor, administrator, conductor, and performer,
including a potential Canadian record 43 seasons as ESO assistant principal trumpet and induction to
Edmonton’s Arts and Culture Hall of Fame in 2014. In his secret identity as a skilled pilot, he is an active
air crew member and instructor with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, the ground school
instructor at the Edmonton Flying Club and a columnist for COPA Flight magazine. Bill has been an active
participant on a number of major search and rescue efforts in a variety of positions from pilot to search
coordinator. He has also been known to fly colleagues to remote northern communities as part of the
National Arts Centre’s music outreach clinics. Bill flies his own Cessna 172 – C-GWUD.

Also during this meeting a presentation will be made to our recent Integrity Awards Recipient, Joe Cloutier, CEO, Inner City Youth Development Association.  Joe will be awarded a Paul Harris Fellow pin.  The Edmonton Rotary Club Foundation will be providing a $1000 donation to Inner City Youth Development Association.

Rod will review his plans for the upcoming Rotary year spanning July 1st, 2023 to June 30, 2024

Rod has been a Rotary Club of Edmonton member since April 2004. During the past few years Rod has been chair of the International Services Committee.  Rod has been an important liason for our club members to donate to The Rotary Foundation particularly End Polio Fund.  He has served on the district's Playground committee helping Rotary clubs provide playgrounds to countries such as Belize.  Rod has made numerous trips to Belize City to build playgrounds.  As such he has been instrumental in supporting the Emmanuel Foundation for the storage and shipping of playground equipment in Alberta to Belize.

Empowering Alberta’s One Million Caregivers

How Caregivers Alberta Supports People to Age in Place

Caregivers Alberta has been supporting caregivers for over 20 years, through our Intake Support Line, 1:1 Coaching, and COMPASS for the Caregiver (a 4 week program) to name a few. Did you know that nearly one million Albertans currently provide unpaid care to loved ones living with illness or disability? Founded in 2001, Caregivers Alberta strives to empower and promote the well-being of our province’s unpaid caregivers by providing resources, mental health support, and facilitated connection with other caregivers. We are Alberta’s only organization dedicated solely to caregivers. We think there is overlap in out interests and the service we provide in our local communities and helping where needs are significant.. We are a provincial organization, and our office is located in Edmonton. 

Darrel joined Caregivers Alberta in October 2022. He brings over 20 years of senior leadership experience in the nonprofit sector to our organization, 15 years of which he spent as a Director with the MS Society of Canada.

This August, Alberta’s two districts and clubs (especially in Calgary and Edmonton), have the unique opportunity to participate in the Monarch Hope statue tour (photo attached), sponsored by the Monterrey Metropolitano Rotary Club (Mexico), Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad, and others.  This tour builds on last year’s 1^st Monarch statue event that raised more than $100,000 for 60,000 oyamel fir trees necessary for Monarch Butterflies.

During these dates, the MOMA Hope statue will travel between Calgary/Edmonton to Winnipeg, Toronto, Windsor, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, and several points south into Mexico ending its journey at the Monarch Biopshere Reserve (near Morelia, Mexico).

Rotarian David Eaton (Environmental Chair for his District in Mexico) will travel with the statue in Alberta and is speaking to clubs about the purpose of the statue’s visit.  In addition, David hopes that your District will sign an Operation Pollination Partnership (that covers all clubs in your district).  Once signed at the District level, Club Presidents are then invited to sign a Pollinator Pledge specifically for your Club (all projects, large or small, are welcome; no judgement is ever made regarding a project – EVERYONE is invited to help address the global crisis of pollinator decline).

You may already know about challenges bee keepers have with Bee Hive Colony Distress Disorder.  Bees are very important pollinators of Alberta crops and flowers.

You may not know that Monarch Butterflies have been spotted in Edmonton's river valley.  They are mostly attracted to milkweed.  Although David is obviously focused on Monarch, this presentation opens up to all pollinators (bees, wasps, moths and other insects) and improves the environment for pollinators.
