Give Life Alberta: What You Need to Know about Organ and Tissue Donation

Aug. 26, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Over 90% of Albertans support organ and tissue donation, but few know how to act on their good intentions. Give Life Alberta’s Senior Communications Advisor Su-Ling Goh (formerly of Global News) will share what you need to know if you’re interested in leaving a life-saving gift, and a kidney recipient will share his incredible story of hope.

Su-Ling Goh is the Senior Communications Advisor for Give Life Alberta (formerly the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donation Program). She proudly joined the team after 17 years as the award-winning Health Reporter at Global Edmonton, where she always felt honoured to share inspirational stories of generous donor families and grateful recipients.

In her new role with AHS, Su-Ling is encouraging a culture of donation in Alberta through awareness campaigns, community engagement and public education sessions. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta and a diploma in Radio and Television from NAIT.

Su-Ling will be joined by Christian Zyp who has benefited from a donated organ:

Christian Zyp has been a teacher with Edmonton Catholic Schools for over twenty-five years. In addition to teaching Drama, he has also been a volunteer at CJSR, a member of the board for several film festivals in Edmonton and performed for many years on stage in productions he wrote and co-directed. In late February 2016 he contracted meningitis and nearly died. After being in a medically induced coma he discovered he was a bilateral below the knee amputee, had skin grafts over a third of his body, lost his right thumb, has permanent nerve and tendon damage on both arms and kidney failure. In 2019, after nearly 3000 hours of dialysis, he received a kidney transplant.

UofA School of Business - Provincial Impact and Recent Initiatives

Sep. 09, 2024 12:00 p.m.

ALBERTA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

The Alberta School of Business (ASB) has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916 as a school of accountancy. Over the years, it has grown and evolved, becoming the first business school in Canada to be accredited by the international Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in 1968. The school awarded its first Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree in 1924, and in 2010, it was formally named "The Alberta School of Business." These milestones highlight the school's longstanding commitment to excellence in business education.

Both the Business School and the University of Alberta are consistently ranked in the Top 5 in Canada.  The vision of the Alberta School of Business is to shape tomorrow and better the world through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to uplifting each other. The school aims to anticipate future trends, cultivate a culture of excellence, illuminate with impactful research, and integrate diverse perspectives to address complex global challenges. This vision is aligned with the broader strategic goals of the University of Alberta, focusing on interdisciplinary research, immersive education, and strong community engagement.

Looking ahead, ASB is focused on several new initiatives designed to strengthen its academic offerings and global presence. These include expanding master's programs in areas like management analytics and real estate development, establishing The Cities Institute to foster interdisciplinary research, and enhancing accessibility through holistic admissions. Additionally, ASB is building international partnerships, such as launching an MBA program in Singapore and developing new 2+2 programs with institutions in Latin America and Asia, all aimed at ensuring the school remains at the forefront of business education globally.

He has also been a past Shimomura Fellow at the prestigious Research Institute at the Development Bank of Japan.

Since joining the University of Alberta in 1992, he has held several leadership roles, including Associate Dean of MBA programs (2002-2005), where he launched the Masters in Financial Management in Shenzhen, China, as well as degree offerings in Fort McMurray. He also chaired the Department of Finance from 2007-2017, helping to found the Alberta Finance Institute to foster financial education and research contributing to the province’s economic development.

As Dean, Dr. Mehrotra is committed to fostering an innovative environment within the Alberta School of Business. He has spearheaded efforts to create partnerships with universities across Asia, enhancing the global reach and impact of the School. Additionally, he is focused on integrating analytics into all business courses, ensuring that students are equipped with the critical skills needed in today’s data-driven world. His leadership is centered on preparing students for the evolving challenges of the global business landscape, ensuring that the school remains a dynamic and forward-thinking institution.

Susan Ancel, Director, One Water Planning, EPCOR

EPCOR’s One Water Journey of Integrated Resource Planning – A History of Innovation and Resiliency

Sep. 16, 2024 12:00 p.m.

Topic Summary:  EPCOR Water Services has utilized an Integrated Resource Planning approach to manage the Water utility in Edmonton since the early 1990s.  Integrated Resource Planning looks beyond the traditional master planning approaches focused solely on grey infrastructure solutions to opportunities to work with the environment and the community to identify approaches that build overall resiliency in the utility and position the utility as a partner for the changing community growth needs.   Since 2017 with the transfer of the Drainage utility from a City of Edmonton department into EPCOR has been approaching water management from a One Water perspective.   Susan will provide an overview of the successes of this One Water and Integrated Planning approach in Edmonton over the last few years, including our successes in water conservation, stormwater strategies and future direction to the wastewater systems in the community that make us a leader in Canada in management of our water resources.

Susan Ancel is responsible for the development of the strategic plans for the utility across the entire water cycle for EPCOR Water Services. Some of her accomplishments include being recognized for her development of the Integrated Resource Plan for flood mitigation for Edmonton that considered capital and operational risk mitigation planning, as well as the interrelationships between utilities, insurance, disaster response agencies and the public.
