Breaking Chains: A Former Child Soldier’s Story of Resilience and Service
Sep. 29, 2025 12:00 p.m.
Breaking Chains: A Former Child Soldier’s Story of Resilience and Service Born and raised in a remote village in Sierra Leone, Paul’s early life was defined by relentless hardship, growing up in extreme poverty with no access to basic necessities like clean water, electricity, or schools. At the age of 16, during the Sierra Leone Civil War, Paul was abducted and forced to become a child soldier. He eventually escaped but was homeless and survived on the streets by begging and working as a porter in local markets. Paul’s fortune shifted when an American missionary recognized his passion for education and supported him through high school and university. Against extraordinary odds, he became the first in his family to graduate with a university degree followed by two master’s degrees from Nigeria and France and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Now based in Edmonton, Paul mentors African immigrant youth, offering academic support, career guidance, and motivational sessions. He recently founded the Harmony Habitat Foundation; a nonprofit seeking to bridge cultural divides and empower immigrant communities to engage in environmental sustainability and to create a shared sense of responsibility for the province's natural resources and ecosystems. Paul’s story is a testament to the unyielding resilience of the human spirit and the profound transformations made possible through education and compassion. It mirrors Rotary’s unwavering mission: to uplift communities, foster leadership, and build bridges of understanding through meaningful services and actions. |

"Reflections and Learnings from the Jasper Wildfire"
Feb. 09, 2026 12:00 p.m.
Update Feb 6th:
Richard Ireland was born and raised in Jasper, Alberta. After completing a law degree and beginning his legal career elsewhere, he returned to Jasper with his family in the late 1980s. In 1989, he was elected to the Jasper Town Committee, the advisory body that \receded the formation of local government. Over the next two decades, Richard played a central role in the community’s push for self-governance and later helped consolidate municipal administration. His work has come to symbolize Jasper’s aspiration for local self-determination. In October 2001, Richard was elected as Jasper’s first mayor. Since then, he has continued to earn the community’s trust, being acclaimed in 2004 and 2017 and re-elected in 2007, 2010, 2013, 2021, and most recently in 2025. Mayor Ireland’s leadership came into sharp focus during the devastating 2024 Jasper Wildfire Complex. Despite facing personal loss and uncertainty alongside his family and friends, he remained a calm, compassionate, and steady presence. His messages to displaced residents offered reassurance, gratitude, and hope. He acknowledged the heartbreak while highlighting the heroism of firefighters whose efforts saved approximately 70% of the town’s structures and ensured the safe evacuation of over 20,000 people.
Today, Mayor Ireland continues to work with the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada to support Jasper through the long and complex recovery process. With characteristic resolve, he remains committed to rebuilding a stronger, more resilient community. Richard is married to Bonnie. They have two sons and two granddaughters. --------------------------------------------
