For the past 20 years, our featured speaker Agnes Joyce has focused her career and education on the assessment and treatment of chronic conditions and the maintenance of health, with a major focus on understanding stroke in particular. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy in 1994 and worked in both rural and urban hospitals in Alberta, planning and implementing stroke services to improve the access for all Albertans to appropriate stroke care. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in Canada (including the 40-60 year age group). As a result, Agnes' interest now extends to include a greater focus on stroke prevention. In 2006, she also obtained a Master of Science in Health Promotion and uses these skills in her current position as a Regional Stroke Service Coordinator for Alberta Health Services. She is working with this group to establish an integrated provincial network services aimed at the provision of 'best-practice' care in all areas of the province for stroke prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation.June is "Stroke Month", and as a result Agnes and her colleagues will be presenting many one-hour presentation sessions on prevention and factors on how to identify if someone is having a stroke.
