Editor's Notes

Leap year edition of the Edmontatian - we will only publish another Leap edition in four year's time.
Fun thing to consider about leap day:
  • For those people who are born on a leap day, they only get to celebrate their birthday on the actual date every four years. Does this make them a lot younger?
  • Watch the movie “Leap Year” (2010, starring Amy Adams).
  • In school or at a party have children engage in leaping/jumping contests, including the game Leap Frog.
  • Make a frog cake or cupcakes.
  • Since this is an extra day, try to give extras all day – extra hugs, extra cookies, extra compliments, etc.
I do like the last one most!

Note from the President

Hi Rotarians

Winters coming to an end... time to think of spring?  I've already planted my seeds for growing Tomatoes (8 varieties) and Marigolds.   Early March I plant Onions by seeds and a number of flowers.  I can only do this using indoor lights that are only inches away from the plants.

Speaking of warm weather,  we could really use your help for the Million Dollar Golf Event on June 8th.  Don't golf?  Able to help us with a decent auction item? Able to twist the arm of a friend to take the day off to participate in this important event?  Please register early as we really need players to be signed up quite sometime before the event commences.

Even closer in time is our first Integrity Awards on March 18th at the Chateau Lacombe.  It's been a long time since we have had a gala event for our club. Drinks at 6:00, Supper service at 6:30-7:00, Awards from 7:00 - 9:00.  Concludes at 9 pm. Tickets $60 per person and are available online through Eventbrite.  Includes parkade parking attached to the hotel.

Got your tickets yet?  Trust me.  This is a worthwhile occasion to bring a friend or two.  The award presentations are always rewarding and sometimes tearful and personal.  Do it now.  Purchase your tickets at https://tinyurl.com/sp68xkn

Finally please keep the date of Monday, April 20th open for our annual Mayor's speech.    I look forward to hearing from Mayor Iveson as an update on the City of Edmonton.

Yours in growing Rotary Club of Edmonton

Stories
In memory of Ken Stewart
Ken Stewart, 93, was a Rotarian with our club from May 1990 to July 2018. Ken passed away on January 24, 2020. He was a respected member of the business community and the community at large. He was 'Clothier to the Bar Association and Legislative Assembly, along with providing bespoke suits and uniforms for Fort Edmonton. Starting out in haberdashery in 1944, he met Jerry Pateman and together they purchased "The Boys Shop" in 1961. Stewart & Pateman operated on 1st and Jasper, until Jerry retired in 1986. Stew, as he was known, then opened "Stewart's" and stayed in business until 2020.

I collected the following memories from a few of our members:

From Hal Tipper
All my memories of Ken are good.  I'm not too sharp on computers and he was a year older than me, but he kept telling me about the things he was doing with his that I just didn't understand.
A great guy and a fine Rotarian.  A workaholic who kept his business going right up to the end.  I'm sorry that I won't be able to attend the memorial get together.

From Ralph Young
My only memories are of Ken as a very, quiet, humble man who always had a smile and a positive outlook. He was not an active Rotarian but seemed to enjoy the fellowship with a small core of Rotary friends.

From Robert Lang
I remember indicating in a Rotary presentation that Ken should have included Rotary pins with the gowns he sold to Lawyers and Judges.  Got huge applause from the audience.

Family and friends are welcome to gather in remembrance and celebration on Saturday, March 7 in the lobby of the Phipps-McKinnon Building from 1:00 - 4:00pm. 10020-101 Ave.

Expanding Youth Services

When Myrna Findt (RC of SprPNG+for+Word+documents,+presentations,+and+web+use.uce Grove) meets with students returning from their year-long Rotary Youth Exchange, it reinforces the decision she made to become the District 5370 Youth Exchange chair.

“The changes in these kids and the personal growth and the potential of all these kids with this type of change is tremendous,” she says. “You can see the difference. That’s all I need to be absolutely supportive of the program.”

The students’ experience of living and studying in another country can have lifelong effects, says Myrna. “The decision they make about what they want to do later on is very often reflective of the kind of experience they had.”
