The Golden Years - Are Alberta Seniors Getting Bronze Medal Treatment?
 
How should all Alberta seniors be treated by the government as they age?
 
There is a growing trend for today's seniors to continue living in their own homes for as long as possible. In doing so, the biggest obstacle they face is the affordability of necessary care services as they age. Even if they are able to self-fund some of the home care they require, there is inadequate government financial support available to assist them with the balance. By contrast, there are many Alberta seniors' facilities which are fully-funded, with residents who might be able to pay their own way but don't. 
 
Alberta seniors' facilities like Canterbury Foundation offer "aging in place" where residents can move in and still have an independent lifestyle, but then receive increasing levels of care and support as their needs change. However, like those who choose to continue living in their own homes, these seniors pay their own way until they pass away with little or no government financial support . 
 
Heidi will address this present two-tiered  system and current efforts to  make it more equitable.
