"Reflections and Learnings from the Jasper Wildfire"

Richard Ireland was born and raised in Jasper, Alberta. After completing a law degree and beginning his legal career elsewhere, he returned to Jasper with his family in the late 1980s.

In 1989, he was elected to the Jasper Town Committee, the advisory body that  \receded the formation of local government. Over the next two decades, Richard played a central role in the community’s push for self-governance and later helped consolidate municipal administration. His work has come to symbolize Jasper’s aspiration for local self-determination.

In October 2001, Richard was elected as Jasper’s first mayor. Since then, he has continued to earn the community’s trust, being acclaimed in 2004 and 2017 and re-elected in 2007, 2010, 2013, 2021, and most recently in 2025.

 

Mayor Ireland’s leadership came into sharp focus during the devastating 2024 Jasper Wildfire Complex. Despite facing personal loss and uncertainty alongside his family and friends, he remained a calm, compassionate, and steady presence. His messages to displaced  residents offered reassurance, gratitude, and hope. He acknowledged the  heartbreak while highlighting the heroism of firefighters whose efforts saved approximately 70% of the town’s structures and ensured the safe evacuation of over 20,000 people.

Today, Mayor Ireland continues to work with the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada to support Jasper through the long and complex recovery process. With characteristic resolve, he remains committed to rebuilding a stronger, more resilient community.

Richard is married to Bonnie. They have two sons and two granddaughters.
