e-presentation by John R McDougall, Past President of Alberta Research Council
and more recently, Past President of the National Research Council. Title: The time is "Now to Bridge and Reboot - the Canadian Economy: a proposal for a Sea to Sea to Sea project (C2C2C2)". It emerged from an original idea of Richard Roemer more than 50 years ago, but now the time is right to move the concept forward.
Resurrected by John R. McDougall as the "Northern Corridor" in 2014, Tom Jenkins
took the idea to Cyrano, the Univ of Calgary School of Public Policy and the Canadian Senate. Its time now, to give this project a significant push. C2C2C is a not-for-profit foundation building public support for the idea of major infrastructure corridors to connect the country and providing a basis for long-term economic growth. The goal is to define a long-term strategic vision, that has strong public consensus and can be implemented in a coherent and integrated manner, much as the Inter-state highway system was developed in the US. The plan is to build consensus and gain approval for a major corridor system of about 7,000 km connecting all three oceans and the 13 political jurisdictions that make up Canada. Indigenous people have had a leadership role right from the start. The work will include defining acceptable routing and recommending models for governance, approval and regulatory oversight. The group will also explore models for financing major infrastructure within the corridor system. The presentation will include multi-modal options, potential economic, environmental and social benefits, and the many R&D and technology challenges that would/could unite Canada's research capabilities with the many advanced trade skills that would be required, thus leading to employment at all levels of the value chain. |

Our Monday meetings - plans
Aug. 31, 2020 1:00 p.m.
Please join our Rotary Club meeting on Monday August 31st, 1:00 pm to participate in a "club assembly". These town hall type events, which will be held about once a quarter are to inform, engage and discuss with members regarding club matters. Should we attempt a "hybrid" type of meeting with both in-person and zoom connection? How would that work and what are the issues? For example: Meeting schedule - start at 12:00 noon or 1:00 pm? How many people would attend in person? How do we facilitate and commit audience to a speaker, and what set-up would be required? Should we try to organize meal or food service of some sort? It is also an opportunity for members to ask other questions or raise issues. Club Past-President, President and President-Elect will be available to discuss matters as we can. RCoE Integrity Award recipient for 2020
Sep. 21, 2020 12:00 p.m.
Please join our Rotary Club meeting on Monday September 21st, to hear from Ross Wein, our club's Integrity Awards recipient for 2020. The gala event was to be held in early April, 2020 however with social gathering shut down we asked Ross to hold until opportunity arose to present the award to him. We are now moving ahead with online meetings, and as Ross did not have a chance to speak at the gala we have handed over this entire meeting to him. Ross has worked tirelessly to establish the not-for-profit Alberta Abilities Lodges Society (AALS) and to create a fully accessible outdoor lodge suitable for the 400,000 Albertans living with physical or cognitive impairment. The AALS mission is: To enable more citizens with a disability, seniors, and others to improve their health and to enjoy natural Alberta outdoor heritage all through the year.” This is accomplished with cabins, workshops, hiking/biking/wheelchair trails, snow-quad trails, fruit orchard, fire pit, and gardens for gardening therapy. They use the garden and orchard produce at the lodge with any surpluses going to the Edmonton and Leduc Food Banks as wells as YESS. Ross continues to campaign for quality of life experiences for the impaired. He speaks widely and raises funds for the benefit of others. Truly a life of service above self!
