![]() Concerns and opportunities in public education
Mar 06, 2023 12:00 PM
Jason Schilling, President, Alberta Teachers Association https://www.teachers.ab.ca/ Jason Schilling was elected president in 2019 following two years of service as vice-president and more than eight years of service as district representative for South West. Prior to his election as President of the ATA, Schilling taught English and drama teacher at Kate Andrews High School, in Coaldale, where he worked for the 17 years. Schilling’s assignments as president include chairing the CTF (Canadian Teachers’ Federation) Committee, serving as a member of the Strategic Planning Group and the Teacher Years of teaching - I have been teaching for 25 years, though the last three years I have been on leave while working at ATA President. School you last taught at - I taught at my last school, Kate Andrews High School in Coaldale, for 17 years prior to assuming the role of President. Why you became a teacher - in the simplest form, it was to make a difference in the lives of students. I have always benefitted from great teachers, and hoped one day to be a great teacher as well. I recall my middle school language arts teacher really made me feel seen as a student, and that was important especially at the age. I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since. Why does Public Education matter—As a product of public education in Alberta, I see the value it provides to students across the province. Public Education opens the doors for our students, creates opportunities and the great people who work in our schools care deeply about the students in their buildings. That matters a lot to me. |
